A novel process for algae biorefineries

Activity: Talk or presentation › Invited talk

Description

Keynote presentation.

An innovative biorefinery approach that transforms algae waste into additional biofuel feedstock. The process extracts carbohydrates before lipid collection, then converts them to glucose using enzymatic hydrolysis (optimised at 55°C for 20 hours). This glucose-rich stream ferments into extra lipids via oleaginous microorganisms, yielding 15% additional product. By achieving 75% carbohydrate conversion and improving solvent extraction efficiency, our work demonstrates a practical pathway to maximise algae biomass utilisation, critical for economically viable biofuel and bioproducts production and circular bioeconomy applications.
