BIERGTalk International Seminar Series. Anaerobic digestion and characterisation of biochar.

Activity: Participating in or organising an event › Organising a conference, workshop, ...

Description

Speaker: MS.ENG. Musa Idris Tanimu

Abstract: Anaerobic digestion of organic matter is related to its composition, and the characteristics of the raw material, such as volatile solids and matter, need to be analysed. Some samples, such as biochar, are problematic because of the possible loss of volatile organic matter during drying, even at low temperatures. Usually, volatile solid content is used as a primary indicator of methane potential. However, the specific methane yield of a substance on a volatile solid basis is not constant because of variations in the organic matter composition. For example, in crop residues, the content and availability of volatile solids are influenced by factors that in turn influence biomass production, such as location, climate, plant variety, cultivation management, and maturity stage at harvesting time.
