Abstract: Establishing a production unit (chemical factory, refinery, petrochemical complex, mineral processing unit, power plant) is normally performed through an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) procedure in which the unit is designed (basic and detailed Engineering), material and equipment are purchased (Procurement) and are fully installed in proper infrastructure (Construction).
Practicing Engineering is not limited to design, simulation, or running experiments. Purchases of equipment and material of Energy Projects (commonly known as Project Procurement) highly requires engineering knowledge and expertise as well as some materialized knowledge in business and commerce.
In the competitive job market, an Engineer with commercial skills who can not only design and simulate a process but also can prepare and comment on technical datasheets, establish purchase orders, and negotiate on purchase terms and conditions will stand out from the job seekers. In addition, learning commercial skills for an engineer can lead to positions as Engineering Managers as an employee or can have the advantage of entrepreneurship in a middle term perspective.
