Abstract: In the operation of a chemical plant, automatic control systems are used day-in and day-out to ensure safe and economic management. A wide variety of mathematical models and algorithms are used in these automatic control systems to assist us in meeting the objective of plant safety and reliability. A mathematical model of a chemical plant can be obtained either from phenomenological models or from empirical data (also referred to as machine learning lately). This talk focuses on the importance of the use of dynamic models obtained from first principles in conducting offline studies and online control.
