BIERGTalk International Seminar Series. Solar energy heat treatment processes: Application to water desalination and the drying of agri-food and fishery products.

Activity: Participating in or organising an event › Organising a conference, workshop, ...

Description

Speaker: Dr. Serigne Thiao

Abstract: This seminar examines innovative solar thermal applications addressing critical challenges in the Casamance region of Senegal. Attendants would explore how abundant solar radiation (averaging 1,950 kWh/m² annually) can revolutionise water desalination and agri-food processing. This is important because traditional fish preservation methods, like smoking and drying, remain essential for food distribution across remote communities but pose health risks through Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon contamination. Similarly, significant post-harvest losses affect mango production. This Seminar investigates solar-powered alternatives for water treatment and product drying, offering sustainable pathways to reduce wood consumption, minimise health hazards and enhance food security. Join us to discuss scalable solutions with broader implications for climate-vulnerable regions worldwide.
