Description

Keynote presentation

This presentation surveys bioenergy technologies from first principles to frontier practice. It opens by framing the energy crisis, peak oil, population growth, greenhouse gas emissions and the tension between sustained economic growth on a finite planet, before defining bioenergy and mapping the fundamental conversion pathways to bioethanol, biodiesel, biogas and syngas across feedstocks from sugarcane and corn to jatropha, palm and waste oils. It then examines the benefits and challenges: land availability, the food-versus-fuel debate, trade routes, ethical principles and blending regulations. The talk closes on the way forward (algae, wastes, microbial fermentation) and projected 2050 demand.
