Personal profile

Research interests

I am a dedicated Professor with nearly two decades of experience at Canterbury Christ Church University. Throughout my career I have committed myself to outstanding and original interdisciplinary and cross disciplinary research, exemplary innovative and high quality teaching and impactful contributions to the field of Children's Health, Sport Pedagogy and Physical Education.

My current research focuses on Motor Competency, Physical Development Physical Education, Physical Activity, Wellbeing and Health Education. I have informed educational development initiatives and policy, in particular children’s wellbeing as well as motor competency. I also lecture within these areas and supervise Masters and PhD students within these fields. I also supervise PhD students with my own discipline of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences and cross boundaries to also supervise within the Health Faculty and the Education Faculty. I also supervise level 7 Medical Students with their research projects.

I have been awarded the University’s Teaching Excellence award twice (2012 and 2022) for outstanding teaching and learning and have been awarded the yearly 'Golden Apple' seven times by the Student Union for exceptional teaching and support and being particularly inspiring in my field. I do indeed aim to inspire the next generation of teachers and early years practitioners, as well as GPs, to enjoy physical activity, to understand paediatrics from a range of lenses and for them all to be role models encouraging children to be fit, happy and healthy.

I am the Chair for the Early Years, Special Interest Research Group within AIESEP, - International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education. I am an AIESEP board member with responsibility for the special interest groups, both in terms of supporting and developing SIGs. I have responsibility within the research committee for developing partnerships, collaborating across partners to 'tether the ecosystem'. As collaborative research is strong, louder and more powerful. I am also an Early Years Consultant for the Association of Physical Education (the national association for our subject discipline).

At the same time as being a dedicated academic researcher, I am also a world-class athlete, a former World Masters Track Cycling champion. I am proud to role model, promoting physical activity, health & wellbeing throughout all aspects of my life, inspiring others with my accomplishments and hard work. In my local area (Ashford), I am acknowledged as a talented athlete, indicating that age is no barrier.
