Michel Funicelli is a Senior Lecturer in Policing and the Course Director of the BSc (Hons) in Professional Policing at Canterbury Christ Church University (UK).

Academically, Michel holds a BA in History from Université de Montréal (Canada), a BA (Maj in Psychology) from Thompson Rivers University (Canada), a MA and PhD in Experimental Psychology, both from Concordia University (Canada), a Graduate Certificate in Learning & Teaching in HE from Charles Sturt University (NSW, Australia), and a Post Graduate Certificate in Learning & Teaching in HE from Teesside University (UK). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Professionally, Michel served as an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve in a combat engineer regiment prior to embarking on a police career. Michel is a retired police officer from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) with over three decades of operational service in various investigative fields such as patrol, major crime, riot squad, close protection of VIPs, federal offences (drug and anti-smuggling enforcement), and organised crime, as well as being a supervisor of mixed teams made up of police investigators and civilian personnel. He has vast policing experience in the investigation of a wide spectrum of crimes against property, against the person, and organised crime at the domestic and international level. Michel is also the founding president of the British Columbia Mounted Police Professional Association and is one of the pioneers who led the labour movement within the RCMP that eventually led to the unionization of RCMP members in 2015. He has testified before a parliamentary committee and lobbied government officials throughout Canada on police labour rights.

On retirement from the RCMP, Michel joined Charles Sturt University as a Lecturer in Policing and then progressed to another lectureship in Policing Studies at Teesside University. 

His research interests are in the areas of memory detection through brainwave analysis, detection of deception, investigative interviewing, psychopathy, and violent extremism.

Michel has a few publications to his credit, he has presented internationally in the areas of violent extremism, memory detection through brainwave analysis, and police interviewing. He has been a guest speaker on several podcasts and radio shows. Finally, Michel is currently leading Canterbury Christ Church University’s Cold Case Unit.
