    Abstract

This article challenges some of the assumptions in Kloep M. and Hendry L. B. article “Over protection, Overprotection Overprotection. Young people in Modern Britain". In particular it draws attention to location, age, class ethnicity and gender as factors which will affect the extent to which young people's experience may or may not be over constrained by adult supervision. It also argues, drawing on key texts in the development of youth work, that skilled interventions and effective programmes may provide the framework and opportunities for the development of the skills and habits required to become "adult" which adolescent groups, isolated from adult support may lack.
