Art Deco cinemas of Thanet

For Heritage Open Days 2025, we bring together the festival theme of Architecture with the centenary of Art Deco to focus on the elegant, streamlined, luxurious and, above all, ‘modern’ cinemas that arrived in Broadstairs, Margate, Ramsgate and nearby towns in the mid-1930s. We find that, although Dreamland Cinema in Margate has become a definitive example of the style, it was by no means the only experience of Art Deco enjoyed by local and visitor audiences.
