Abstract
King James VI & I is usually considered a ‘pacifist’ king. This chapter investigates the origins of James’s moniker ‘Rex Pacificus’, and discusses the more warlike image of James that is often overlooked but which existed quite prominently (particularly in Scotland and Protestant northern Europe) in the early years of his English reign.
