Beasts: A translation and commentary of the First Family Medieval Bestiary

    Research output: Book/ReportBook

    Abstract

A facing-page translation of the First family Latin bestiary is long overdue as the medieval Second, Third family, and Transitional bestiary versions are all published and translated. This book is a valuable addition to the field of medieval animal studies.

A group of expert Latinists brought together for the NLHF Medieval Animals Heritage project present an English translation of London, British Library MS 2 C 12, with kind permission of The British Library.

The book aims to recapture the delight and the wonder that readers of the first bestiaries might have enjoyed. Sumptuously illustrated, with a full commentary, including creative approaches and examples for teaching, make this an extraordinarily rich and significant volume.
