Abstract
This chapter explores working class subcultural leisure spaces within Karl Spracklen’s empathetic qualitative research in Northern England looking into beer, rugby league, and metal music. The argument is that he seeks to develop a new approach to subcultural studies through using a Habermasian approach based on a combination of ethnographic research techniques including participant observation and biographical experiences through autoethnography. We see Spracklen as a Northern academic male researcher who negotiates masculinity while supporting the critical idea of Raymond William’s radical project within cultural studies.
