Capturing (self-determined) learning gain using personality measures and core trait self-evaluation: A new “learner profile matrix”

We demonstrate an exciting new way of evaluating the self-determined HE learner journey based on the widely used core self-evaluation trait measure (Judge et al., 2003). The ‘learner profile matrix’ captures aspects of a student’s personality in conjunction with skills, knowledge and personal development. The ‘diagnostic value’ of the learner profile matrix means that stakeholders can quickly identify if HE learners should focus on developing their inner psychological capabilities (including self-efficacy and self-belief), or more extrinsic goals and experiential learning opportunities. The matrix also captures key elements of personal and self-determined learning gain (Canning and Callan, 2010; Blaschke, 2012).
