Abstract
This chapter traces the life and work of the charismatic Danish lay Buddhist teacher Ole Nydahl.
Nydahl is the founder of the global Diamond Way movement and a successful lay convert propagator of the Tibetan Buddhist Karma Kagyu (bKa’ brgyud) school. Following Nydahl’s spiritual journey from his early life to becoming a recognized Buddhist teacher, three different charismatic phases in the Diamond Way’s development are identified (foundational: 1972-1982; transitional: 1982-1992; and expansive: 1992-2007). Particular attention is being paid to the dynamics of Nydahl’s acknowledgement as ‘Lama’ (1972-1995). Observations on the Diamond Way in its current late-charismatic phase (2007-) conclude the chapter.
