Abstract
Staff within NHS research delivery teams work according to research protocols, which can require participants to complete lengthy cognitive, neuropsychiatric, or self-reported assessments, as well as the undertaking of semi-invasive procedures such as blood tests, scans, or ECGs. It is essential that participants feel empowered, have choice and control, and experience no distress during these processes.
This is of particular importance for vulnerable groups, where prior trauma or adverse life events may be unknown to the researchers. Given that such populations also access wider healthcare services, the need for the implementation of trauma-informed approaches into NHS research delivery teams spans all research areas and specialties.
With all work co-produced by an advisory panel of professionals and public representatives, the aim of this mixed-method service evaluation is to create a co-produced, single-session Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) training programme for patient-facing NHS research delivery staff across Kent, Surrey, and Sussex (KSS). An exploratory survey determining the need for such a training was sent to all NHS research delivery teams within KSS.
Preliminary findings indicate that 90% of respondents work with vulnerable or hard-to-reach groups, 60% have no specific training in managing participant distress, and 30% cite they are ‘not at all confident’ in managing distress. These responses support the need for a single-session training for NHS research delivery staff in TIC.
Although TIC is embedded in many healthcare services, its use in NHS research delivery teams remains limited. This project is of relevance beyond NHS research and applies to all settings involving patient participation. As the NHS adapts to diverse populations, integrating TIC is a moral and strategic priority, boosting research quality, retention, and accessibility for historically marginalised groups.
