Exploring music within cross-curricular learning

After noting the cross-curricular nature of music in everyday life the chapter discusses the resistance to cross-curricular approaches with music and its growing isolation in many secondary schools. The chapter then outlines a range of learning settings in which music can usefully combine with other curriculum subjects to answer questions or understand issues, places, things and processes. It provides opportunities to use your own experience, provokes you to think differently about music combining with other subjects. Four different modes of cross-curricular learning are introduced and later exemplified in more detailed case studies. The chapter ends with the introduction of a fifth cross-curricular mode that combines both liberal and traditional approaches and brief reflection on the importance of music across all aspects of school life in supporting the well-being of students.
