Abstract
‘Fossil deep’ is an experimental, speculative treatment of place and its non-human genius loci. The story is inspired by a trip to Whitby in Yorkshire during Storm Arwen and draws on the author's journal and field notes. From a realist foundation, the piece explores increasingly fantastical encounters with the non-human to consider how the remnants of the monstrous are contained in the materiality of the present, placing us in a perpetually hauntological relationship with species loss.
