Key challenges in criminal investigation

This book briefly explores some key challenges in relation to criminal investigations carried out by the police in the UK in the modern era. Building upon relevant research, the modern context of competing agendas of professionalisation of the police service and Government austerity measures is discussed. The move away from artisan to professional appears to be gathering pace, with successive Government led reviews championing such a journey. In contrast Government austerity measures appear to directly oppose these proposed developments.

How do these competing agendas complement each other (if at all)? The book traces the development of the detective from inception to the modern era, and goes on to discuss their training and education. The current position is critically analysed, with reference to the research and published literature. Additionally, investigative decision-making is analysed together with the legal framework within which modern detectives work. How detectives utilise legal argument and case law is considered in detail and this is linked to the level of knowledge and understanding expected of (or indeed that should be expected of) the modern day investigator. Success and failure in criminal investigation is then discussed with reference to current research and available literature. Future considerations are also discussed.
