Abstract

Populations of Biomphalaria pfeifferi, (a vector of Schistosoma mansoni) and Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus Morelet (a vector of Schistosoma haematobium) collected from water of medium hardness and alkalinity in Rhodesia were cultured in the laboratory over several generations in hard, medium and soft water (soft water-up to 5 mg/L calcium; hard -over 20 mg/L calcium) Electrophoresis on cellulose acetate membrane of perivitelline egg protein of B.pfeifferi showed quantitative changes in three protein fractions when hard, medium and soft water populations were compared. After hydrolysis, egg proteins showed quantitative differences in one amino acid only, phenylalanine, when separated by thin-layer chromatography.
