Abstract

This systematic review explores the benefits of optionality and differentiation in higher education STEM courses. It links course design elements to student motivation, behaviours, and improved outcomes. The study utilises PICO and SPICE frameworks for research question design and search terms. Findings suggest micro-level theories and personalised systems show greater success in student retention and engagement. Clear communication and support in making choices are crucial for student success.
