Abstract
Theatre has been part of European and Western culture for more than 2500 years, from the Dionysos-festival in ancient Athens to the digital theatre of our time. This is a theatre history for those who would like to understand what theatre is and has been throughout history, whether you are a student, journalist, teacher, work with theatre or just are interested in theatre. The book gives an introduction to Western theatre history and presents important developments, ideas and people that have impacted theatre throughout the centuries. Theatre is seen as part of society, and different theatrical forms are presented in light of the cultures they were part of. The meeting between actor and audience have happened in different ways throughout history. By getting to know the history of the theatre, the reader will also get a better understanding of the theatre of our times.
