Abstract
Traditionally many nurses, midwives and health visitor's have not considered post registration education an essential requirement to continue to practice safely. Indeed, as a professional group there has been an attitude that safe practice does not require education but simply a modicum of common sense. Green (1991) suggests that the profession’s record of continuing development is abysmal and not comparable to other professional groups. The United Kingdom Central Council’s standards for the future of professional practice and for post registration education and practice (UKCC 1994) (Figure 1) are an attempt to address this issue from both professional and educational standpoints.
