Abstract
To what extent do the aesthetic principles of the cartographer serve the interests of the user? Is the cartographer's desire to create an aesthetically pleasing map greater than their desire to meet other design objectives or ideals, perhaps relating to communication? This paper critically examines the role of aesthetics in cartography. Following an overview of how cartographic aesthetics vary historically and culturally, it examines the extent to which aesthetic judgment has been - and will continue to be – a key imperative in mapmaking, affecting symbolization and shaping the concept of cartographic excellence.
