Volunteer tourism may not be as good as it seems

    Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

    Abstract

Much volunteer tourism is characterized by a highly circumspect view of economic development in parts of the world in which the latter is most needed. As the lead article mentions, ‘small is beautiful’ is all too often taken as gospel, and a hostility to big business is meat and drink to some of the foremost academic advocates of volunteer tourism.
