This thesis explores conscious and unconscious uses of memory during the creation and reception of sample-based electronic dance music (EDM). It investigates how musical borrowing, through sampling, inferred sampling, and mixing, is received by listeners and utilised by producers, with these practices collectively framed as sample-based music.
