The Experience of Pregnancy and Early Parenting for Women Who Are Addicted to Heroin

Abstract

This doctoral research explored the experiences of women who were pregnant or parenting whilst experiencing heroin addiction. Using qualitative longitudinal methods, the study examined women's relationships with maternity, substance misuse and mental health services, the impact of stigma on engagement with care, and the ways in which professional relationships influenced recovery and parenting. The research contributed to understanding the interaction between psychological, social and service-related factors affecting women with complex needs.
